Birdbuddy’s $99 Nook Feeder Brings Free Bird Recognition to Beginners

Birdbuddy has launched the Nook, a camera-equipped smart bird feeder designed for beginner bird-watchers. The standard model starts at $99 and includes artificial-intelligence features without a required subscription.

Birdbuddy Nook: What the $99 feeder includes

The Nook uses a camera and the Birdbuddy app to identify bird species. The feeder includes:

  • A 2K-resolution camera
  • Portrait and landscape camera orientations
  • A birdseed container holding approximately 3.8 cups
  • Motion-activated recording
  • Longer recording during periods of heavy bird activity
  • Bird alerts and species recognition through the Birdbuddy app
  • AI features without a required subscription

The Nook is designed for compact outdoor spaces such as patios, balconies, and small yards.

Standard and solar models

Birdbuddy is releasing the Nook in two versions:

Model Price Main difference
Nook standard $99 Standard battery-powered model
Nook with integrated solar panel $159 Solar panel built into the roof

The Nook’s battery is rated for roughly a month. The solar version costs more and includes a panel intended to help keep the battery charged.

Along with the Nook, Birdbuddy is releasing Birdbuddy Home for $219. It has a larger six-cup capacity and a wraparound bar that provides more perching space.

Is the Nook a good choice for a beginner?

The Nook combines a relatively low entry price with automated bird identification. A new bird-watcher can use the Birdbuddy app to receive alerts and species information when birds visit the feeder.

The camera records when motion activates it, with longer recording possible during periods of heavy activity. The system also requires a phone and the Birdbuddy app to access alerts and species-recognition features.

The $99 model keeps the initial cost below $100. The $159 solar version may be more convenient for owners who want help keeping the battery charged, depending on the feeder’s access to sunlight.

Birdbuddy Home is a larger option, with its six-cup capacity and wraparound bar, but it costs more than the Nook models.

Where to place the Nook

According to placement guidance attributed to Birdbuddy’s in-house ornithologist, the feeder should be positioned approximately four to ten feet from shrubs or trees. This gives birds nearby cover while keeping the feeder far enough away to help deter squirrels.

If the feeder is mounted on a pole, the recommended height is five to six feet above the ground.

The Nook is intended for compact spaces, including patios, balconies, and small yards. Its placement should also leave the camera with a clear view of the feeding area and provide access for filling the seed container and charging the battery.

The practical takeaway

The Birdbuddy Nook is positioned as an accessible way to begin observing backyard birds with automated species recognition. The standard model costs $99, while the solar version costs $159 and may help reduce the need to recharge the battery manually.
