Craig Bellamy Demands More from Wales After Narrow Portugal Defeat

Wales left Lisbon with praise for their resilience but no points after Portugal secured a 1–0 victory in their opening League A fixture. João Félix’s deflected strike decided a match in which Craig Bellamy’s injury-hit team spent long periods defending without possession.

For Bellamy, the result reflected both sides of Wales’ performance. His players showed the endurance needed to stay in the contest against the holders, yet he also believed they could have used the ball more effectively.

Wales forced to defend for long spells

Portugal put Wales under sustained pressure at the José Alvalade Stadium. Bellamy acknowledged that his side had spent an unusually long period without the ball and had been required to “suffer” defensively.

Portugal had a goal ruled out by VAR after Cristiano Ronaldo was judged to have been offside, while Félix’s winning effort took a deflection on its way into the net.

Wales remained competitive despite missing several players. Bellamy accepted the compliments directed at his team but identified possession as an area where they needed to improve.

“There’s more for us,” Bellamy said after the match.

Injuries tested Wales’ depth

Wales were without Harry Wilson, Karl Darlow, Dylan Lawlor, Joe Rodon and Nathan Broadhead because of injury. The absences left several players who do not regularly play every week to contribute against Portugal.

Bellamy praised his players’ commitment, particularly their willingness to work through a demanding match. His side’s defensive effort kept the contest close, but Wales struggled to exert consistent control with the ball.

Late chances showed what Wales can offer

Wales improved as the match entered its final stages. Brennan Johnson and Lewis Koumas both came close to finding an equaliser, giving Portugal a late reminder that the visitors still posed an attacking threat.

The chances showed that Wales were capable of troubling Portugal when they moved forward with greater purpose. Bellamy’s challenge is to retain that resilience while helping his team create more attacking opportunities earlier in matches.

Ronaldo remains part of the wider story

Cristiano Ronaldo attracted much of the pre-match attention, returning to the stadium where he began his professional career with Sporting in 2002. The 41-year-old missed a major opportunity, had a goal disallowed for offside and was substituted during the second half.

Ronaldo could feature again when Portugal meet Wales in Cardiff.

For Wales, the focus will be on producing a stronger collective display. Portugal’s narrow victory leaves Bellamy’s side with a clear task: improve their use of possession without losing the resilience that kept the contest close.

The immediate test: Denmark

Wales face Denmark in Copenhagen on Sunday at 17:00 BST, giving Bellamy’s squad little time to recover and adjust.

The short turnaround will test the depth of the squad and the players’ physical condition. Bellamy must decide whether to retain the structure used against Portugal or make changes to increase Wales’ control of the ball.

Wales will need to connect more passes under pressure, create attacking situations earlier and reduce the amount of time spent defending deep.

The defeat in Portugal showed that Wales can remain competitive while depleted. The match against Denmark will indicate whether they can add the attacking control Bellamy believes is still missing.
